    Purpose

The aims of the study were to evaluate the quality of  body image and to investigate the correlation with the quality of sexual life during a Sex Reassignment Program.

    Materials and Methods

The sample was composed of 50 gender dysphoric adults (25 transwomen  and 25 transmen) before and one year after cross sex hormonal treatment.

The WHO quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-100) was used to collect data; in particular  we considered quality of life scale and two subscales: the Body Image and the Sexual Activity subscales.

The questionnaire was administered at the beginning and at least one year after hormonal therapy, in order to compare the quality of life, the quality of the body image and the quality of sexual activity.

    Results

The majority of the subjects showed an improvement both in the scores of quality of life scale and of body image subscale with no statistically significant differences between transmen and transwomen.

Results were discordant for the quality of sexual activity with some differences between transwomen and transmen: in transwomen an improvement in the body image was not correlated with high scores in Sexual Activity subscale while in transmen a better quality of the body image was related to a better quality of sexual activity.

    Conclusion

The discomfort of sex-specific body features and the establishment of a satisfactory body image are known to be particularly important for subjects with Gender Dysphoria. The hormonal treatment showed a positive impact on the body image, on the quality of sexual activity and generally on quality of life.
